  review

I'm going to start off by saying I had mixed feelings about this book. I tend to listen to a majority of my audiobooks on the car ride to work and while I am working with that being said it started off slow and what I felt was overload of information BUT once the story started to pick up for me it took off. I found myself staring into space and getting lost within the story rather then doing my work more times then I care to admit. Lots of character development, good story line, and overall nice flow. I rate this audiobook at about a 4 out of 5.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Ronelle Antoinette. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Review: A Mirror Among Shattered Glass by Romarin Demetri

Book: A Mirror Among Shattered Glass

Author: Romarin Demetri

Kindle edition, 221 Pages

Published June 2nd, 2016

Synopsis:

Unable to contain the deadly nature of her family secret and powers, nine-teen year old Romarin Demetri hails from California, U.S.A, to unearth her heritage as a descendant of serial-killer, Countess Bathory, the woman that lent Dracula his legend, and cursed Romarin with an appetite for blood.

Unenthusiastic about relocating to her birth city of London, a charming paranormal investigator with claim to the throne could change her mind, as he leads her to the only living and distant relative she has: a raven-haired recluse named Talia, who has taken refuge in an old castle in the heart of the city, and doesn’t seem to have a heart of her own.

After a rough introduction to the lethal, inappropriate, and enchantingly sarcastic people she calls her housemates, perhaps the other misfits will be her first true friends; However, as much as these people are like her, they still have hidden vendettas, a taste for revenge, and will struggle between what is just, and what will settle their psychological upheaval. There is only one way for Romarin to become part of the Supernatural London Underground: Can she be the one who challenges them to put down their ghosts and demons and make their world together?

Review:

Perfect blend of fantasy and reality, I found the story to be very intriguing with a flowing story-line and well written relatable characters. I only criticism I have is the cover art, it isnt something that stands out to me. I'm glad I decided to look past the cover and give the story a chance. It was worth it because I can't wait to pick up the next installment!

EXCERPT

“Bella, don't remember me dead in a box. You can say goodbye now. Then I can die happy. I want you to change your name somehow. Get married, have babies of your own. You don't deserve jail. You didn’t do this. I know that. If what the papers say is true, these Romans are bad news. They have connections in jail. You can't testify against Anthony, and in jail you’ll be silenced."

"Momma, how do you know all this?" she asked.

"Nurses talk. I hear the television when I am sleeping or when people think I am sleeping." She tried to keep most of the gory details from her daughter.

"But, Momma, I can't leave you," she cried. Her heart was breaking.

"Bella, it is I who am leaving. You must go on. I gave you life, my precious, and there is nothing more I want than for you to live. Take my jewels. All of them. I have been squirreling away funds out of my bank account since you were arrested. I had saved quite a bit for your wedding. There is twenty five thousand in my safe under the bed. I wish it were more."

"Momma," she cried.

“Hush, let me finish. I want you to walk out of this apartment while I am alive."

Her mother paused and gasped for breath. Again a look of pain crossed her face but she fought against it. Bella tightened her grip on her mother's hand. Her mom tightened her hold as well.

"Bella, the jewels, keep a few, but sell what you have to. Go to North Carolina. Aunt May and Uncle Normand, your great aunt and uncle had a cabin there. The address is in the box along with the deed. I have not been there since I was a child and they died shortly after. You can hide there for a while. It's in a town called Cherokee that borders Tennessee. Your Aunt Jocelyne inherited it but never did anything with it except pay the taxes. She paid ten years at a time. But since Aunt Jocelyne’s passing, it's mine technically. I never got around to changing the deed. It's far enough away from Memphis, you can hide and no one will recognize you. I don’t think it can be traced to you or me. Plus, we have been gone a long time now. I haven't been to Cherokee since I was a nine or ten, and you have only been in the area a few times while we were driving through the Smokies. But the people are nice. Our kind of people. You'll find kindness there. Someone will help. When you feel secure, you can leave North Carolina and Tennessee, start over somewhere else if you want. I don't know, Bella. But Bella, promise me you'll go. You’ll try.” The desperation she heard in her mother’s voice was her undoing. The tears came unbidden down her cheeks. Her mom had been planning her escape for her.

“Momma,” she cried. She didn't want to leave her. She was all she had left of her family. She wanted to bury her and say her goodbyes.

“Bella, promise me,” her mother begged. And then she saw the tears in her mother’s eyes. “It is what I want Bella."

Choking down the sob that threatened to her engulf her, Bella did the only thing she could think of to prevent her mom from begging. She nodded. She agreed. "Okay, Momma. I'll go. For you.”

The smile her mom gave her was like a ray of sunshine breaking through the storm. “Bella, I love you. I want you to live."

“I love you to Momma. Always."

"Always, Bella. Never forget. I'll be watching. Always know your momma loves you. Trust your heart, Bella. Now, kiss me quick. Give me the morphine so I can have a good rest, get the safe from underneath by bed, and go pack.”

Bella uncapped the liquid concentrate and placed the prescribed number of drops under her mother’s tongue, knowing it would keep her free of pain but would not hasten her death. She leaned over to press a kiss to her mom’s paper thin cheek.

Her mom grabbed her by the face and kissed her. Then hugged her. But it wasn't a long hug. Not one Bella felt satisfied with. Her mother was pushing her back. "Go Bella. Go," she urged.

Bella retrieved the safe and left the room reluctantly. Running was something she had never thought of doing, ever. Her only thoughts were of being with her mom for as long as she could. She had to stay, at least until her mother passed, but the thought of leaving her mother without a proper burial tore at her heart. As much as she hated to admit it, if she waited, the police would be picking her up straight from the cemetery, if not sooner, and take her to jail. She had received word five days ago from the judge. The guard had died, and her bail would be revoked upon her mother’s passing.

Bella packed her clothes and then looked through the contents of the safe. It was all there, everything her mother had told her about. She wanted to honor her mother’s wishes but she couldn’t let her die alone…what kind of daughter did that. She had time; the nurse wouldn’t return for several days unless she called her. And out of respect for her mother, after she died, Bella would call, but not until she was miles away.

A little over an hour had passed when Bella peeked into her Mom’s room, quietly checking on her. Her mom was pressed back against the pillows a smile on her face. Her eyes were closed, and she was still. There was no wheezing, no coughing. And there was no pain. Her mom was gone.

She was at peace. And Bella, took one last look, blew her mom a kiss, and walked out the door. She had promises to keep and miles to go before she could sleep.

REVIEW

Can I start off this review by stating that I want a Marino brother for myself? I thought Nikko was HOT but now he has a rival and his name is Blaze. MJ Nightingale does it again with a fresh set of characters, a good plot with a flowing story line and some steamy scenes. Perfect amount of suspense, just the right amount of spice.  I can’t wait for the next installment.

EXCERPT

If she had to sleep with him one more time, she thought, she would do it. In the intensity of the moment her heart raced. She felt Nikko sink to the bed behind her, and then before her mind could make sense of what was happening, he hauled her to him. She was over his knees and he had panties down, and without warning, he struck. He was spanking her. Hard! He had meant it.
“Ow,” she yelled.
“Don’t scream,” he threatened. “And, that was for drugging me,” he breathed. She began to struggle.
“Oh, no you don’t,” she cried out after the initial shock from the first strike had passed. His arm lay over her back like iron pinning her to him.
Whack, came his hand again. “That was for the barbecue sauce.”
“Ouch, Nikko, please,” she begged as her other ass cheek flamed from the intensity of the slap he gave her. She continued to struggle, but kept her voice down despite the pain and humiliation.
Whack! “That was for stealing my car,” he breathed as she cried out his name softly begging him to stop. The force of the blow took her air for a moment.
Again, his hand descended. “This was for making me worry.” She gasped and cried and took it.
Whack! “This is because I care god dammit,” and he hit her again with all the ferocity he thought she could handle. Her cheeks were on fire. She jumped each time he hit her, and by the sixth and final strike, she was crying and lay in a heap over his legs.
He slowly turned her over, and the tears he saw there were genuine. “Look at me, Ronnie,” he whispered softly, brushing the hair out of her face. She looked at him sadly, the tears streaking down her beautiful face. His eyes lost their anger, she noticed even though she couldn’t meet his gaze for long. His tone softened. “Ronnie. You deserved that.” She sniffled and nodded.

She couldn’t look at him still. She did. She knew it. His hand began to stroke her back, and still she could not meet his eyes. Guilt overwhelmed her. But when his lips brushed her shoulder, she turned and saw something strange and startling there in his eyes. She couldn’t look away if she tried.

“And that was because I fucking love you, Ronnie. God help me, but I do. I came because of that, and I was scared to death you were going to get hurt. Not for my brothers, not for the money. I came because the woman I love was putting herself in danger.” He saw her eyes go from pain to shock to surprise. He had one more thing to say. “Ronnie, baby, please believe me. I never slept with that woman.”

She saw stark, bleak desperation in his eyes. Could it be? Ronnie ran the gamut of emotions. His words. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She saw his eyes, and more than his words, she saw the honesty there. Suddenly, she didn’t feel the pain his hand evoked, and she reached her hand up to touch his face, as a single tear formed in his eye. She swallowed. He watched her.
“I . . . believe you,” she whispered. She did. But she couldn’t find the words to express what she was feeling. Her shock was just that great.
His lips descended and the kiss they shared said it all. Ronnie grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him down with her to the bed. This time what they did wasn’t fast, and even though it felt like their time was running out, he wanted to show her with more than words just how much he loved her. And she let him.

REVIEW

This is the first book I have ever had the pleasure of reading by MJ Nightingale
and it won’t be the last. I was instantly drawn into the story and I couldn’t stop until I was flipping over the last page. The story flowed as well as the character development and I was kept interested throughout the entire book.  The tension between Ronnie and Nikko was palpable. The perfect amount to suspense and romance.

Addison Kline Author Interview

1. What does your writing process look like?

To watch me write a book, you’d probably think I’ve gone insane. I write out of order. Post-it

notes everywhere. Sometimes I write at the computer, other times I have to write in a

notebook. Maybe I need a change of scenery? I’ll go to the park and scribble my thoughts done.

To the outsider’s eye, my process is a chaotic mess, but somehow, I make it work :)

2. Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

When I’m writing a mystery novel, my darkest scenes are written in the middle of the night by

candlelight. I love writing during storms, especially rain and snow storms. It always sets the

perfect tone. When the whether won’t cooperate, sometimes I listen to Rainy Mood. Also, I

cannot write without music.

3. What book do you wish you could have written?

I wish I had the guts to write a memoir of my actual life. Sometimes truth is much stranger than

fiction.

4. Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?

Stephen King, JK Rowling, Nicholas Sparks, Sharon Sala

5. How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?

Names are very important to me. I pick names based on meanings, based on what sounds right,
the family’s heritage and their personality.

6. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

Aside from being a mother to beautiful, respectful boys? Hitting the top 100 list on Amazon.

7. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Writing full time

8. Have you always liked to write?

Yes. I’ve been writing since I was six years old.

9. What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Don’t quit and don’t be afraid to make up your own rules.

10. If you didn't like writing books, what would you do for a living?

This is an impossible question for me. I can’t bend my mind around the not writing thing.

11. Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?

I think every author does, but it’s rare these days. Critical reviews can be incredibly helpful to
growing as an author. I take each review with a grain of salt. I don’t let the good ones go to my
head, and I don’t let the bad ones dampen my spirit. I keep it moving.

12. What is your best marketing tip?

Start a newsletter. Grow a mailing list. Get social with your readers.

13. What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?

Editing

14. Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

Nothing is off limits.

15. Is there a certain type of scene that's harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?

Not really. I write the book as it comes to me.

16. How many books have you written?

I have fully written 17 books, with 10 more partially written
works. I am working on my 18th full novel.  I have 10 projects published.

17. What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I am working on re-releasing Black Horse through Booktrope! I am also working on a top secret manuscript behind the scenes :)

Review Tour: Moonflower by E.D.C. Johnson

Moonflower
by E.D.C Johnson
Genre: Paranormal Fantasy

After Josephine Wood’s father dies of cancer, her mother up-roots the two of them and moves to the city. Josie hates her city life, but her teenage issues are of little consequence when they have a car accident and she wakes up in a strange land (reminiscent of Victorian Europe) alone. Lost, with her school backpack as the only connection to her world, Josie struggles to find her way home. She is found by Lucius Conrí, the son of a Marquess, who possesses royal blood and the gift to shift into a wolf’s form at will. Can the kind-hearted Lucius help her find her way while winning her love, or will she fall for Donovan Conrí his older, more serious brother and heir to the Conrí wealth?

Review

I must admit that I have mixed feelings about this book. It starts off with Josephine she is our 16 year old protagonist who has recently lost her father to cancer. On her way to school one morning she gets into a car accident and when she wakes up in a foreign land. Her Mother who she remembers was driving the car is nowhere to be found and for someone who recently lost her father she doesn’t seem to worry much about her Mothers whereabouts (this is when my mixed feelings started). Anyway… back to the point. Josephine wakes up in a foreign land where the royal family just happens to be shifters. We meet the brother Lucius and Donovan *Insert love triangle and brother rivalry* needless to say the book ends with a slight cliffhanger and since I don’t want to give much away that is all I will say on that. I will say that is refreshing to read a book about Werewolves where they don’t automatically know their mates.
I love PNR, I seem to be on a kick of it lately so I am happy to have read this book.  It’s a sweet romance with paranormal elements.
